The victory, added to Paris Saint-Germain’s 2-1 win over FC Basel at St-Jakob Park, ensures the Gunners’ progression to the Champions League knock-out stages for the 14th consecutive season.

Indeed, Arsenal have now made it out of the Champions League’s group stages for the past 17 seasons, but Arsene Wenger’s failed to make it out of the second group stage in 2001-02 and 2002-3 when the tournament had a different qualifying structure ahead of the knock-out stages.

Arsenal and PSG both have 10 points from four matches, with the winner of the group set to be decided in the matchday five encounter between the side on 23 November at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners, 6-0 winners over the Bulgarian champions when the sides met at the Emirates on 19 October, were 2-0 down at the Vasil Levski National Stadium after just 15 minutes thanks to goals from Jonathan Cafu and Claudiu Keseru.

Granit Xhaka pulled one back for Arsenal on 20 minutes with a shot from an Ozil cross, then Olivier Giroud made it 2-2 three minutes before the break with a header from Aaron Ramsey’s cross.

And the Premier League side saved the best till almost the end, as Ozil, hat-trick hero in London two weeks ago, flicked the ball over goalkeeper Milan Borjan before sliding the ball beyond two covering defenders to score an 87th-minute winner.
