Joel Campbell scores twice as Costa Rica thrashes U.S.M.T

Goals from Johan Venegas, Christian Bolanos and a brace from Joel Campbell leaves the U.S. bottom of the qualifying table and on the outside looking in for making the World Cup in 2018.

Brad Guzan, starting in goal for the injured Tim Howard, was immediately called into action early in the match. Venegas beat John Brooks in the penalty area but Guzan went to ground and blocked his close-range shot to safety.

And minutes later, the Middlesbrough man was forced to make a save again, with Bryan Ruiz settling a nice cross into the area and attempting an overhead kick that deflected off Guzan’s face and away from the goal.

The U.S. found chances hard to come by, Fabian Johnson testing Keylor Navas from distance in the 28th minute, shortly after Christian Pulisic set up Bobby Wood from close range to no avail.

The Americans’ best chance of the first half came just before the break, Johnson playing Wood into the penalty area and crossing for Pulisic, who couldn’t get a step on his defender with Navas beaten.

Costa Rica broke the deadlock just before half-time, when Bolanos settled a long pass over the U.S. defence and curled a perfect cross in for Vanegas to head home past a helpless Guzan for a 1-0 lead.

The second half saw Costa Rica content to sit back a little more than the first half and force the U.S. to chase a goal. However, Jurgen Klinsmann’s team was largely unable to break down the hosts.

And it was Costa Rica that would have the best chance of the early stages of the second period, with Venegas settling a long ball in the area, beating Timmy Chandler and forcing Guzan into another close range save.

Bolanos delivered the first knockout punch to the U.S. in the 68th minute, after Ruiz crossed the ball in to the area for his teammate to head past Guzan.

Two defensive blunders by Brooks gifted Campbell and Costa Rica their third and fourth goals, with the Sporting loanee beating Guzan both times in one-on-one opportunities.

The U.S. will have a long time to think about the two losses, as CONCACAF doesn’t resume qualifying matches again until March of 2017.
