Granit Xhaka to change shirt numbers

Arsenal’s latest signing Granit Xhaka has bizarrely elected to change his shirt number just four days after being handed the No.16 jersey by Arsene Wenger.

The Swiss international had taken on the shirt number previously worn by Aaron Ramsey, who nabbed Mikel Arteta’s No.8 following the Spaniard’s departure at the end of the season.

But now Xhaka has decided to change to the No.29, which has not been worn since Marouane Chamakh left north London for Crystal Palace.

Arsenal confirmed the shirt number U-turn on Tuesday, also revealing his reasoning: the number 29 is the year of his birth – 1992 – backwards.

Fortunately for Arsenal fans, the club – via a rather cringe-inducing meme – have promised to put Xhaka’s new number on any shirts that were ordered while he was still wearing No.16.

“We had previously announced he would be wearing No 16,” the club explained. “Supporters who ordered shirts with his name and the original number via Arsenal Direct or in Arsenal stores will have their shirts automatically printed with the new number.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this causes but hope our supporters understand the special circumstances on this occasion.”
